Why is it necessary that I take the Praxis Core Assessment?
In the State of Virginia, in order to be accepted into the education program at the college level, students must have taken a preliminary Praxis Core Assessment to demonstrate proficiency in three areas: reading, writing, and mathematics.
At Randolph-Macon College, the education minor students must pass the Praxis Core Math Assessment and the VCLA (measures reading and writing) by December of their Junior year.
What is the passing score in the area of Mathematics?
Currently, the passing score for the Praxis Core Mathematics Assessment is 150.
Why should I take advantage of the RMC tutoring sessions?
The R-MC tutoring sessions began in the fall of 2012. Evidence supports that the tutoring sessions offer a solid review of mathematical topics in which students have not used in four-to-five years.
By what date do I need to have taken and passed the Praxis Core Math Assessment?

What can I expect from the Praxis Core Math Assessment?
The Praxis Core Math Assessment is a timed multiple-choice assessment. Students are NOT allowed to use calculators. If you choose to register for the paper test, you have 60 minutes to complete 40 questions; for the electronic test, you have 75 minutes to complete 46 questions.
What topics will be on the Praxis Core Math Assessment?
The majority of the mathematical topics are from the areas of Algebra and Geometry. The breakdown of the four main categories is:
Number and Operations 32%

- Squares and square roots
- Order of Operations
Geometry and Measurement 23%
- Angles, Triangles, Polygons
- Pythagorean Theorem
Data Analysis and Probability 25%
- Measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode)

How do I register for the Assessment?
Students need to register to take the Praxis Core Math Assessment online. To access the registration, use the following link: www.ets.org/praxis
Students will need to provide debit or credit card information when registering. It is strongly suggested that students take the Praxis Core Math Assessment as soon as the tutoring sessions are complete since the mathematical review will be current.
How do I use this online component to prepare for the Assessment?
This wordpress account has been created for the sole purpose of assisting R-MC Education students as they prepare for the Praxis Core Math Assessment. The wordpress account has multiple tabs for you to access which will lead you through a series of informative documents to help prepare you for the test.
What other resources are available?
In addition to this online component, Dr. Yesbeck also provides in-person math workshops during each semester. Workshops are typically two sessions for 1.5 hours each and are held in October/November and in March/April. Look for more information about the in-person workshops within the Education department.
